Hello. I have enjoyed visiting this site, as I truly have a love and appreciation for old barns. Additionally, this past summer, I hand scraped and painted my barn, the west side I finished with a "Mail Pouch Tobacco" ad.....I live not too far from the MSU campus.
I take a lot of pride in my barn, and would enjoy hearing from others who feel the same way

I have been interested in barns, especially with advertising since the late 70's when I came across an old Simonez ad on a barn on Rt 22 in Penn. Since then I have taken detours and back roads on all my vacations just in hopes to see another different barn. I would be interested in locations of barns with advertising. Thanks lynn

Have returned to my 'teen hobby of creating scaled models from scratch, using balsawood...finished a model of a Shenandoah Valley barn this past summer...am now working on a scaled model of a Virginia covered bridge...each beam and plank is cut by hand...what an invigorating avocation for this educator!

I have a "bird" problem in my barn! Can anyone help? One bit of information given to me is that birds will not make nests in barns that they do not have a permanent "access" in & out of. Our stalls are "walk-out" stalls for the horses to come & go which leaves the birds open access. Has anyone hung "plastic" in strips so their horses can come & go but birds can't? Did it work well? What type & where did you get the plastic??? thanks!

I am looking for information to preserve my family's farm. The barn is of special importance because my grandfather was a WI state senator and a dairy businessman. He started a cooperative called Dairy Distributors which eventually became part of AMPI. The barn is in need of restoration. It is a post and beam structure that was built as a show barn for the dairy industry in Wisconsin. I do want to see the barn deteriorate. I need help in how I can preserve this piece of history. I read with interest about your efforts to determine the overall condition of your old barn. You may want to look at the attached web page: http://www.tfguild.org/ which is the Timber Framer's Guild. They specialize in preserving and building timber frames or post and beam buildings. That said, I made the assumption that your barn is a timber frame building although it is possible yours is a conventionally built dimensional 2x building, in which case you would want to obtain the services of a different person or group.
There is a barn renovation program being rerun (This Old House Classics) on HGTV in my area. In that project, the old barn was inspected by the TOH crew and then by a member of the Timber Framer's Guild. They determined the barn to be too far gone so they razed it, saving what they could and then put up a new timber frame and basically built a new barn/house that looked much like the original on the original site.
I am an avid fan of old building renovations & conversions. My wife and I converted a 150 yr old cider mill into a house a number of years ago. Most recently we restored/converted a huge PA bank barn from a dairy to horse barn. This barn had some substantial termite damage as well as sill rot on the bank side. The areas we were concerned about were the insect infestation and rot. We were fortunate that the barn had a good standing seam metal roof and the previous owners had maintained the integrity of the external envelope. Had the roof been poor, the barn would probably have rotted and collapsed by now as the last cow left in 1958! A leaking roof rapidly leads to the demise of a post and beam structure.
Try the Timber Framers Guild to see if they have someone in your area who might check out your barn if a post & beam. Try a good building contractor or inspector for an assessment if a conventional frame. If I can be of any help with ideas or suggestions feel free to write.

So I love round barns. But more important, I want to build a true, working, round barn. Current plans are for 40' diameter, one main floor, partial basement (we're on a slope) and a top floor. Purpose is to house about 20 chickens, a dozen meat rabbits, about 5 - 10 sheep and about 5 - 10 goats. Goats and sheep are for fleece. Don't plan to huose large amounts of grain or hay, but would like a center silo to hold composte to help heat the barn during the winter. It also must have openable windows during the summers (it HOT up here!) but allow them to be closed during the cold, rainy winters. Any suggestions on plans for this barn? Thanks for the help.

I was thinking about what you said about unpainted barns, mostly being plain. There is one instance I immediately thought of that sure does not fit that bill. On the Pennsylvania Turnpike going east toward Bedford, about 5 miles before the exit there is a long straight stretch of turnpike, and on the left side, I believe just before an overpass is the most terrific example of an old elaborate unpainted barn I ever saw. It has many shutters and capulas, I hope it is still there. I first noticed it in the 1950's and have not passed that was for 5 years or so.

During my vacation last summer, we drove through Iowa and I saw a lot of barns that had what appeared to be a small room, generally in the middle of and above the roof, higher than the roof line. Looked like a cupulo but bigger. What is this for? My wife and I joked that it was a room for the farmer to go stay in when he was in the dog house.
