It was February 2002 when I first met Bob Crittendon near his home at San Juan Capistrano, CA. We had been in email contact for a year on
Bob’s book-in-process on historic barns of the American Far West. Bob, a Mississippi native and retired business executive, traced his passion
for barns from a visit as a five-year old to his grandfather’s farm at Martin, TN. Recently Bob sent me the result of his vision and years of
dedication to this retirement project.
Barn in the U.S.A. is a gem! It is a red (naturally) softcover volume
of 104 pages, half of which are high quality full page color photos by Bob’s
collaborator Jim Youden and the balance Bob’s text on selected historic barns
in eleven Western states. Too often this region of the country is understandably overshadowed by the trove of barns in
the Midwest, Middle Atlantic and New England states; Bob’s book focuses and gives due credit to the
vernacular architecture of the livestock and fruit operations of the West.
No matter where you live, if you like barns and Americana, you will enjoy
the photography and history of Barn in the U.S.A. Aside from the selected barns of the Far West, there is a useful section
on barn types and features nationwide as well as current efforts to preserve
this architectural heritage.

Ed. note: The first chapter is of a June 1994 Amish barn raising in Holmes Ct., OH. at which your editor, Charles Leik, participated (I am standing on the right in the white shirt on p. 25). Randy recounts the fall of the young man pictured on p. 24 standing on the barn's peak. I also snapped a photo minutes later and immediately saw men running to the aid of a figure on the gound. When I developed the film I discovered the young
man in free fall along with the ladder that he grabbed in a vain attempt to break his fall. A completely accidental shot that would've been a terrific conclusion to Randy's sequence!

It was spring 2002 that journalist Christina Wilkinson interviewed the owners of the barn that was selected as the Lake County Ohio Bicentennial Barn. Christina, living near Cleveland, describes herself as a city girl with a love for old buildings and was fascinated by the sturdy honest construction of the Lake County barn.
Several months later Christina decided to author a book on the individual stories of each Bicentennial Barn and its owners in all 88 of Ohio’s counties. She was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the owners and their stories that she relates alongside the color photos of each Bicentennial Barn.
This unique method of promoting Ohio’s 2003 Bicentennial began in 1998 when 22-year old artist Scott Hagan painted freehand twelve barns with a 20’ x 20’ logo commemorating Ohio’s 200-years of statehood. By 2000 the project had the public’s attention and Scott had become a minor celebrity with an audience of "barn groupies" at each painting. It was legendary Mail Pouch barn painter Harley Warrick who provided Scott guidance and advice before his death in November 2000.

Structures of Utility is a large volume of the coffee table genre of superb photography of structures, predominantly agricultural and mining, in California's great Central Valley and the adjoining Mother Lode country.
The author and photographer David Stark Wilson is a building designer whose interest in architecture, photography and love of his native California converges to produce a photographic record that features structures, often derelict, against a background of long vistas and the western sky. In Structures Wilson captures commonplace utilitarian structures in subtle tones of black and white photography.
This reviewer hopes that Mr. Wilson will focus his recognized skills on rural buildings, especially period barns, in other sections of the United States. This type of work is very useful to The Barn Journal's goal of increasing "the appreciation and preservation of traditional farm architecture".
