I'd just like to say thank you
for providing such a fine site.
Hi, I'm interested in having my wedding reception in a barn. Does anyone know of a barn for rent in the Chicago area? Thank you! Kristi
Just found this site through our local paper. In my travels always some where there is a barn ,and it re kindles my love of barns which started when I was very young and stayed at my grandparents farm In Penna, the barn was a place to play to watch cows being milked and all the things barns stand for on a working farm. Thanks to who ever started this site.
Lots of great comments, but no one seems to be abile to
give you an idea on why barns are red. I dont know if this
is correct but I believe that the reasone that our barns in
Michigan and the northern regions are red is because white
really attracts flys and bugs. Also it is a little warmer
in our cold northern winters. In the hot south they would
have perfered white simply for the cooling propertys. Dont
know if that is right but that is what I have heard. Nice
As someone who grew up loving the smell of a horse barn, I was fortunate enough to live in one as part of the pay for managing a polo farm. It was a dream come true for me. As a little girl, I always imagined a place where I would someday live with horses below me, just outside my windows, just outside my door. Well the dream was too short lived as a job opportunity out of state pulled me away, but I will never forget that year. It is the most beautiful barn I've ever seen. Spiral staircase to second level with two bedrooms, built in shelves and drawers, long, long closets, windows facing inside the barn's center aisle and out overlooking the pastures. And downstairs a living room/tack room/kitchen/bathroom where I was surrounded by the smell of saddle soap and leather. I sat on the sofa, my feet up on an old tack trunk and cleaned my polo bridles or rolled bandages while I watch the built in television. I am searching for the right property to build a barn or move one to, re/design the second floor for an apartment and live out my days in the company of horses, the smell of leather and wood soap. It's very hard to find farms with apartments above the barns, even with all the barns there are in Maryland, but if you have a barn and need some income, put in an apartment and make someone's dream come true. Until that day comes for my own place, I'll keep looking in Maryland. If you have a place, I'd love to hear about it.
We have recently had an offer to buy a couple of old tobacco barns from a family farm near Winston-Salem, N.C. How can I get an unbiased estimate of their value? The buyer intends to use the wood for "new" construction, but I would prefer to sell them for relocation if they are in good enough condition. Any help would be appreciated.
My love for barns, motivated by my friendship with a friend whose daughter lives in a refurnbished barn in Pennsylvania, has resulted in a series of paintings I would like to share with other barn lovers. The link to this series is: http://www.dulfan.com gallery three "barns" Regards to all, Lucien
Hi all! Does anyone have any info on a barn to rent in the Southern/Middle part of Michigan? It's for my wedding reception Spring 2003, which will have about for about 150 people. Please e-mail me directly!
Thank you! Thank you!
I have a barn in Sterling Illinois, guessing to be built @ 1900, I am wondering if anyone has researched the manufacturers of barn hayforks. The one in this barn has Lowden stamped on it and apparent model "Iron Claw" stamped on it. It has 4 curved forks with a trip mechanism. I'm just curious to know if anyone out there has tracked these beautiful mechanical devices?
About red barns - do the Germans in Germany have red barns? Anybody been to Germany to see?

Looks like I'm following a trend. I am also looking for a barn in which to hold a summer evening reception. I love the slightly unusual idea and it works perfectly with my casual country theme. We have no date set as we have been unable to find a reception site that we love. The wedding will either be held in the Harrisburg area or the Lehigh Valley area of Pennyslvania. Please e-mail if you can help or know or anyone that may be of assistance!
Hi everyone, we have been living in a barn that we are converting into our home. It is turning out to be a beautiful home. Our barn is over 100 years old and we love the old Pennsylvania bank barn look.
I am interested in Joining a club or organization where people that have converted barns get together and talk about things and have get togethers for example xmas get togethers where we can meet in different peoples homes.
I think this would be fun and im sure somewhere in this internet place there is some organization that does this already. Please please please if anyone know of one please respond. Barns make beautiful homes!!! We had the worst home on the block now we have the most beautiful property on the block we are so proud. I have before and after pictures and im so glad i took them.
I love to photograph barns and am looking for interesting barns and especially Mail Pouch Barns in PA or neighboring states. Any help or directions would be greatly appreciated!
I was raised in central Illinois and the barn and crib on the farm was white. I never knew red barns existed until I was married to a Wisconsinite. For those who would like to have a wedding reception in a barn, we just so happen to have Homestead Meadows out in the country that have a farmhouse and red barn for meetings and lots of wedding receptions. This has been around for several years in this area.
Hello all! Besids looking for a barn for a wedding reception, I am also looking for barns that are falling down that you might want to get rid of. I love the old wood and would like to look into salvaging the wood to make other things. Please email me if you know of any barns that need to be taken away. Thanks!

My Green barn, which is a ballon frame,1910 dairy\hay barn,is completely open on the inside with no cross beams.I now have about 40 barn swallows up in it getting ready for thier trip south. Does any body know where they go.Do I have the same families returning every year ..possible for the last almost hundred years. Is there a chance they have been migrating to the same barn in the south just as long ? Has any one ever tracked them ..just as geese have been tracked. Curious to know..Green barn Greg
Why do barns have tongue and groove on three sides and wide planking on the other ( North Side)?
SO glad to see there is someone else that finds barns somthing very special and to be treasured. I found my barn in June of 2000. Looking for a place to live and not much time I stumbled upon it. The realtor book read, cottage on 3/4 acres. The realtor almost refused to show it to me saying, it is so dirty and no basement and such negative comments. That made me insistant to see it. If everyone thinks it one way it usually looks different to me.
Sure enough. I walked in and loved it. My boys 29 and 23 and the rambler, eveything finished generation, hauled me out of there and said, Mom you are not buying a barn. They returned to their homes that night and I made an offer.
It is the actual barn built in the thirties. I have the original pictures, found in a cupborad. I have contacted the lady that first lived in it as a house and also fed horses in it when it was a barn. The second people to live in it was my sons eye doctor and his family. He has passed on. I contacted his wife and invited her out to see what I had done with it. She was very surprised. Neither of the previous owners looked or treated it like a barn. I sure do. I have let my creativitiy go wild. I have tow rope on the walls for trim, large spoons for curtain tie backs. There is sign at the end of the drive that announces the new name, "Bevs Barn". I made my laundry room into a small barn withing a barn. If you are interested or need ideas let me know.
I am truley home at Bevs Barn!
In one year I have painted redecorated and made it my own treasure.
Love to learn about barns and know that people are preserving them, finally!
I am willing to share with anyone whom would be interested.
The town I live in really has no idea that it is even there.
We are known for Spam.

I am looking for a barn/farm to rent around Longmont/Boulder/Lyons Colorado area for a wedding in summer 2003 for around 75-100 folks. Please email me directly. Thank you!
"Why are barns red?" seems to be a common question. I have an answer. It is oral history handed down from a couple of generations back. Our barns and the farmhouse in northern Illinois originally were painted red becasue the pigment in the soil around there was red. That pigment was used to color the paint. The original red color then was close to a brown/red. (Parts of our house still carry that original color.) Today they are red just following tradition, but people choose the commercial paints with a brighter color. Barns in middle and southern Illinois seem to be mostly white. The farther north you drive the more red barns you see.
I am looking for a barn in northern california to rent for a wedding. This site doesn't seem to have many California resources, so any information would be greatly appreciated.
I just read Eddie Roberts article on Mail Pouch barns. I can't believe there's actually people out there who share my barn enthusiasm and respect for these diminishing relics. Michigan has a slew of great old barns, Mail Pouch and otherwise, as does my childhood state of N.C. Glad to know y'all are out there preserving memories of these grand structures also!
I have a large barn 70 by 100 feet with a cedar shingle gambrel roof. The barn is unused but I want to keep it nice. QUESTION: Is it absolutely necessary to remove the old shingles before a new aluminum strip roof is put on?
I have heard yes and no. Anybody got the right answer?
Does anyone know where we could have a wedding party in a barn? I'm looking to have a reception party in a barn HELP!thank you.

I am looking for locations of "Mail Pouch Tobacco" barns. Any information on where to find them? Thanks
Hello, I live on a farm with a Mail Pouch Tobacco Barn south of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. My grandparents have owned the farm for about 55 years now and the entire frame is made of logs. Tday a woman stopped to photograph our barn and said that our address was on the internet. I have two questions: 1.) Does anyone have a list of all known Mail Pouch Tobacco barns? and 2.) Does anyone know of someone who would restore our barn for a cheaper price (not to much money or none)? Please send me an e-mail.
We recently purchased a piece of property in Winterville Maine. It consists of a turn of the century farmhouse a storgage shed and a tired old barn. I was wondering if anyone knows where to start to find someone to retsore a barn like this. I also would like to know if there are groups out there that give grants to restore old barns like mine. Any information would be greatly appricated.
Great site! My husband and i are looking for a barn to purchase so we can turn it into a home. We are also looking for design ideas and /or resources that you are willing to share on this topic.

I live in the North Texas area and am looking for a rustic barn I can have my wedding and reception in. I'd like to stay within the areas of Fort Worth, Denton, Cleburne, Decatur, Burleson, etc... Anything within 100 miles of those please would be nice. This has become more of a task than I thought it would be. I'm really just looking for an individual that would be willing to let me rent their personal barn for a night. I assure you nothing will be harmed and everything will be cleaned up. Please e-mail me at Robin3269@yahoo.com if anyone out there is aware of such a place. Thanks for your help.
We built a barn in Northern Michigan three years ago (in the woods) and incoporated a 2nd story loft/bunkhouse area. Our goal was for our guests have a place to stay when visiting and a place for the kids to sleep. We had visions of a rustic interior, used barn wood is ideal! In our travels we see large and small barns that have fallen prey to mother nature and are simply rotting away in a field. I'm looking for a barn that has fallen down (or standing) and is unable to be repaired. I will remove all of the usable material and finish my barns second story. Michigan or Northern IN or OH preferred Contact Chris at 248-366-9955
We have remodeled and restored an old horse barn from the
early 1900's. We have had many wedding receptions, family
reunions, class reunions, etc. there. We do dutch oven
dinners with guided boat tours. The barn sits on the Snake
River and provides our guests with 60 miles of water sports.
If you have an interest please contact us!! We would love to
take care of a special event for YOU.
